Teacher suspended for using racial epithet

At the time of this posting there hasn’t been any local coverage of this event which surprises me with the footprint that Comcast has in this area.

At 11:30 EST I was in my mail on Comcast.net and then I “just” wasn’t. Then I began my geek exercises … updating my system, viewing logs, pinging and trace routing the world … Once I was convinced that “it wasn’t my system” … I hit the nerd boards (many of which I am a member of I realized last night). Lo and Behold my suspicions have been confirmed, Comcast.net has been victimized!

Even the domain registration information has been hit … (Which is strange enough to me … Doesn’t that point to the registrar/whois and not to Comcast?) I can’t wait to see how this happened. Other notables thathave been hit by KRYOGENIKS EBK and DEFIANT RoXed COMCAST

Why is it so hard for them to put the toilet paper on the roll? It’s not good enough to just grab a new roll of TP and put it in the bathroom. Where is the effort? It takes less than 15 additional seconds to pop out the empty roll and replace it. This morning I had to remind these girls for the second time in as many months that when you finish the roll replace it.

The one curse phrase I’d like to scream at my daughters would be” take your lil asses outside and play” –
~I have to take this off of my list for now. The girls have been playing outside for the last two weeks and I haven’t had to threaten them.

I got mine fellas, you need to get yours. ummmm I guess ladies you can get you one too if that’s your thang.

LAS VEGAS—A 26-year-old entrepreneur from Texas was named Miss USA on Friday, besting 50 other beauty queens for the coveted crown.

“I want to talk to people about how to set a goal and achieve it,” she told The Associated Press after the show. “Because I just achieved my goal.”

Stewart edged out first runner-up Leah Laviano of Mississippi and Tiffany Andrade of New Jersey.

Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith relinquished the crown — and the posh New York apartment that comes with it — in a show aired live by NBC with hosts Donny and Marie Osmond from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The network co-owns the parent Miss Universe Organization with Donald Trump.

Smith, a former Miss Tennessee USA, said she was headed to Hollywood.

Stewart was headed for the publicity circuit. She said she was eager to travel and spread her message of self-improvement to young women. She noted she was one of only a handful of black woman crowned Miss USA in the pageant’s 57-year history.

“I think the United States is coming together,” she said, citing the historic presidential candidacies of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. She declined to name her preference.

“I don’t know, we’ll see. Fundamentally, I’m a Democrat,” she said.

Contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia have been in Las Vegas for nearly three weeks, rehearsing and hyping the 57th annual pageant. After stints in Baltimore and Los Angeles, organizers billed the new venue as a city beloved by the event’s international audience.

The pageant tried to showed off its edge, featuring a grinding live rock performance by the band Finger Eleven, music from Rihanna, and contestants in barely there black bikinis and faux-fur coats.

Donny and Marie kept up a steady stream of sibling banter even while swiftly whittling the field.

Donny Osmond told the losers to “put on a poker face” as he sent them home.

“Or use Botox; then it won’t move,” Marie quipped.

Stewart will compete in the Miss Universe pageant in Vietnam in July. She also becomes a spokeswoman for breast and ovarian cancer awareness and other causes, while traveling to promote the organization.

Miss USA contestants are scored in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Miss Alaska USA, Courtney Erin Carroll, was chosen “Miss Photogenic USA” based on voting at the organization’s Web site. The other contestants named Miss Ohio USA, Monica Day, “Miss Congeniality.” Unlike the rival Miss America, Miss USA contestants are not asked to perform a talent.

Smith’s year on the throne has been marked by fewer racy headlines than her 2006 predecessor, Tara Conner. Conner’s underage drinking landed her in rehab and sparked a media circus documenting her fall from grace.

Smith’s low point was a fall onstage during the evening gown competition of the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City. She was booed by the crowd and Miss Japan won the title.

A bigger blunder this year belonged to Miss California USA organizers. The judges crowned the wrong queen in their November contest and reversed it days later, saying Raquel Beezley, of Barstow, was the victim of a vote tabulation error. Dethroned Miss Los Angeles, Christina Silva, a Hispanic woman, has filed a lawsuit alleging racial bias.

Asked to comment on the lawsuit, Stewart was whisked away by organizers. The Miss Universe Organization would not comment on the matter.

The panel of judges for Friday’s pageant included Heather Mills, model and former wife of Paul McCartney; comedian Rob Schneider; Olympic gold-medal swimmer Amanda Beard; and Christian Siriano, winner of Bravo’s fashion reality series, “Project Runway.”

MILLERSVILLE, Maryland, August 19, 2006-If you can take beer and malt-based coolers on the go, why not wine?

That’s the premise behind Schmitt Sohne’s newest innovation, RELAX Juniors, which offers either RELAX Riesling or RELAX Cool Red, a chillable red wine, in an unbreakable 375 ml aluminum bottle, with a screw-on re-sealable cap. Retailing for about $4.99 per bottle, RELAX Juniors will be displayed in point-of-sale cases of 12, which can sit comfortably on a store counter, encouraging customers to pick up one or two at a time.

Using aluminum bottles for wine has been discussed for over a year. In early 2005, Wine Business Monthly ran a story discussing the possibility of aluminum wine packaging, as did Wines & Vines.

“We think the aluminum bottle is an idea that could revolutionize the way consumers drink wine,” said Christopher Klau, CEO of Schmitt Sohne Wines USA. “It’s easy to grab and go…perfect for stocking the cooler for picnics, ideal for serving at pool or patio parties, or for having ‘just enough’ wine at home. Now, you can still enjoy a delicious wine that’s fresh, crisp, clean and cool anywhere you go,” he added.

Klau noted that the aluminum bottle preserves the taste of the wine just as well–or better–than a glass bottle. The new bottle is a
brand extension for RELAX Riesling, which has been among Schmitt Sohne’s most popular offerings. Since its introduction in 2004, RELAX Riesling has seen sales gains of better than 100 percent year over year. RELAX Cool Red, also introduced this summer, is designed to meet the growing consumer demand for a light-bodied, chillable red wine that’s easy to drink and easy to pair with a wide variety of foods.

“We expect the public to react to RELAX Juniors much like they did for the original launch of Relax. They bought RELAX because it is a great wine at a good value, packaged in a dramatically new, fashionable bottle. We simplified the message about German wine and the consumers responded by trying RELAX en masse. They came back, though, for the taste,” Klau said.

Klau adds that the company is currently working hard to fill advance orders for Relax Juniors. However, production is now in full swing and he expects to have product shipped and available nationally by early this fall. Though the “case” for display holds 12, 375 ml bottles, the actual “case” retailers order will hold two display cases, for a total of 24 bottles.

The aluminum bottle concept may be a brave new world in wine packaging, but for Klau, it is merely part of his brand’s strategy to make German wines more understandable and accessible to the American market. The strategy began in 1996 with the package redesign of Schmitt Sohne’s Blue Bottle line, and the introduction of their wildly popular Little German advertising character.

“With the consumption of wine increasing in America, it is very important that we make our wines fit consumer’s lifestyles. We want
consumers to feel wine is more of an everyday, ordinary pleasure than special occasion treat. This new packaging makes it much easier to do that,” Klau said.

Kansas Beats Memphis to Take Men’s College Basketball Title

The University of Kansas has defeated Memphis, 75-68, to take the American men’s big-college basketball title. As VOA’s David Byrd reports from San Antonio, the game came down to some crucial shots in the waning minutes.

The game was evenly-matched and fast paced for most of Monday night. The lead changed hands nine times and the contest was tied eight times. The biggest lead was Memphis by nine in the second half, but Kansas was able to cut the lead to just two points with less than a minute to play.

Memphis freshman Derrick Rose made one of two free throws, to give the Tigers a 63-60 lead. But Kansas guard Mario Chalmers was able to hit a three-point shot with less than two seconds left, to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Kansas was able to pull away and Memphis could not make up the gap. Kansas Coach Bill Self says it was overwhelming to win such a hard-fought contest.

“You know it was a fabulous game. Both defenses were great and neither team got rhythm offensively and, God, we competed hard on every possession,” he said. “You know it is one thing to win it is another thing to win the way we won. There is just no quit in these guys.”

Memphis Coach John Calipari, whose Tigers lost just two games all year, said that Kansas deserved the national title because it never gave up.

“You’ve got to give them credit because for them not to stop playing and just keep fighting and making plays,” he said. “My hat’s off to them. I just got to tell you.”

Monday’s win is the first national title for Kansas in men’s basketball since 1988.
